Muskoka Sanitorium
Ryan, myself and Rachelle, a newly acquainted photographer, drove up North to Muskoka, Canada to trespass and run around inside an abandoned mental hospital on Sunday.
The massive building opened its doors to tuberculosis patients in 1897. It remained as a treatment facility for those suffering from tuberculosis until the 1950’s (when prevention and treatment of the infectious disease increased it was no longer needed). That is when it became a home for mental disabled men and women. The interesting thing we noticed was the substantially high number of FEMALE rooms as opposed to male rooms. I found out that the hospital at one point before closure housed 305 female patients and only 4 adolescent male patients. I thought that was incredibly interesting as I remember walking through and reading out the door name tags… We found only one male - Paul.
The hospital closed in 1994. It has taken as little as 17 years for the place to rot, decay and fade away.
